Epilogue For Sara

epilogue for sara
‘Eastward and westward storms are breaking, great, ugly whirlwinds of hatred and blood and cruelty. I will not believe them inevitable.’
― W.E.B. Du Bois, The Wisdom of W.E.B. Du Bois

as what’s left
of her short life
is being washed away
by a stream of water
from a garden hose
too thin to weaken
the spreading chemicals
sara feels the burning
that stretches
out from her body
in every direction—
360 degrees of agony

blindly she reaches
into the black absence
hoping her fingers
will brush against
she can hold onto

who can lift her away
from this broken place

who can take her back
to a world of innocence
& grace

& the face of a child
humming to herself
as she plays alone
dark eyes
gazing up
into a cloudless sky
