The New London Writers Second Anthology: Writing from Around the World is a superb collection that entices the mind and stirs the imagination. A cohesive anthology, it spans the globe with compelling stories set against colorful backdrops of diverse culture and society.
But the stories themselves are the real treat. While several of the pieces are excerpts from novels, therefore only offering a small morsel, each story gave me a taste of authors I had not previously known about. Their unique voices drew me into rich and fantastic plots that whet my appetite and left me wanting more.
Especially The Red Lion by the imaginative Mikey Flynn. His dark and deliciously sinister character, Paul Velvet, left me, in the words of Flynn, “Shivering involuntarily as the rhyming words went around in (my) head…(I) wondered why there was an odd vapour of fear surrounding (me).” I can’t wait to read more!
Difficult to lay this one down, 10 Dec. 2014

The Red Lion by Mikey Flynn centers its venue on a cozy British pub that is steeped in a macabre past that goes back two centuries with a direct connection to its new owner. As various characters visit the pub, their individualities intertwine through this new arrival in town who masterly weaves them into his own “programme”.
In this Irish American author’s first novel, Flynn casts himself as one of the book’s disgruntled characters. It is an involving read based on the paranormal and one where the reader feels like he or she is in that pub with them.

This is an awesome book filled with excerpts from novels. Each story is different and all were so engaging and intense. I could not stop reading it and hated to see it end. Each one pulled me in and took me on an engaging adventure. I loved it. The mystery, intrigue and suspense are amazing. The well define characters are perfect for each story and made them all incredible. The attention to detailing is outstanding. It is written in a great format, with each story in a set of its own. The raw and deep emotions from them are so vivid and real. I loved the pictures ate the beginning of each one; they are a great touch for the book. I want to thank Alice Frances Wickham for putting this book together and I will be looking for more of her books. I definitely recommend this book, it grabs your attention and holds it. it was a blast to read.
